No Flavour, on Purpose
When we started developing Performance Drink Mix, one area of debate was flavour. But in early testing, we found that athletes consistently preferred it without. The most common feedback? "It just tastes like water."
That feedback became a core part of our design philosophy. By leaving flavour out, we could create a more effective, versatile, and accessible fuelling solution. The decision was simple: no flavour, on purpose.
The Science of Flavour Fatigue
For any athlete engaged in prolonged effort, flavour fatigue is a real barrier to performance. It’s the point where a once-appealing taste becomes unpalatable, making it difficult to continue fuelling.
Research identifies this as Sensory-Specific Satiety (SSS), a phenomenon where the constant exposure to a single taste profile leads to a decline in its pleasantness. The brain and body begin to reject the monotonous sensory input, which can trigger nausea and lead to underfuelling. A neutral base bypasses this mechanism entirely. It provides the essential carbohydrates and electrolytes without the intense, repetitive sensory stimulation that causes taste aversion, allowing you to hit your targets from the first hour to the last.
A Blank Canvas
A neutral base is a blank canvas. It gives you the control to tailor your fuel to your preference, your activity, and the conditions of the day. Some athletes add variety in ways you would expect – adding a splash of lemon juice, orange juice, or maple syrup. Others get creative. On an early morning training ride in Collingwood, our founder noticed small strings hanging out of another cyclists Olway™ Hydration Bottle. The night before, his friend had mixed the drink mix with hot water and steeped a tea bag for a subtle flavour.
This customization extends to every scenario. An Olway™ Athlete recently ran a personal best, Boston qualifying time in the BMO Marathon. For the early start, he mixed five scoops of Performance Drink Mix with an espresso shot in his Hydration Flask, delivering both carbohydrates and a caffeine boost in one simple solution.
More For Less
Leaving flavour out also keeps costs down. Flavouring can make up anywhere from 5% to 20% of the cost of a sports nutrition product. By removing that single variable, we pass the savings directly to you. This aligns with our purpose: to empower all athletes to perform by making premium nutrition accessible for everyday use. You shouldn’t have to save the “good stuff” for race day.
Final Words
Performance Drink Mix is neutral by design. No distractions, no flavour fatigue, no extra cost. Just the essentials – carbohydrates and electrolytes – delivered in a way you can rely on every single session.
